A forerunner of the Mega Millions Lotto—the so-called 'Big Game’—appeared for the first time August 31, 1996. Six states took part in the initial draw: Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan and Virginia.

The game proved so popular that a Tuesday draw was added in February 1998. A bigger choice of numbers and a “cash payout” option were offered in January 1999. Then in May of the same year, New Jersey became the seventh member state. Three years later, in May 2002, the brand name “Mega Millions” was born. New York and Ohio became member states, and the game was amended to offer players better incentives to play.

In September 2002, Washington became the 10th member state, followed by Texas in December 2003. In June 2005, California became the 12th member, solidifying Mega Millions Lotto as the country’s most widely played multi-state jackpot game.

On January 31, 2010, 23 more state lotteries joined Mega Millions as a historic cross-selling agreement between Mega Millions and Powerball came into effect. With additional lotteries joining since then, Mega Millions is now played in 44 jurisdictions: 42 states plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Based in the US, the Mega Millions lottery can be entered into from anywhere in the world, through a reputable online system. This is where GSLotto comes in, offering access to a wide variety of lotteries globally.

The Mega Millions always starts at $15 million. But the prize money can escalate to huge amounts—one 2012 jackpot paid out $656 million. If you want to win big, Mega Millions is the game for you.

Mega Millions Statistics
The most frequently occurring number is 2, which has been drawn 189 times over the last few years. This number is followed in frequency by 10, 4, 5, 22 and 39. Only showing up 7 times, 61 and 65 are considered unlucky.

How to Win the Mega Millions
There are 9 unique approaches to win with the US Mega Millions. To win the jackpot players need to match 5 numbers plus an extra number called the Megaball. The Megaball is useful in the smaller divisions. The 9th division, for example, is controlled by an extra number that needs to be matched with no exact guesses.

Mega Millions Winners
In 2012 three winners shared a $656 million jackpot. That's a staggering $218,666,667 each.

In 2013, 2 winners split $648 million— the largest annuity payout in history. One of the winners, a truck driver from Northern California, took 2 weeks to check his winning ticket, having at first completely forgotten about it.

The third largest payout came in 2014 when two winners split $414 million. One winner remained anonymous, quietly claiming a lump sum payment of $76.4 million after taxes.
